A Place to Come Back To
In 1950, my grandmother Laurel bought a one-room fishing shack on Diamond Lake—one of the first cabins here. She wasn’t looking for anything fancy. She wanted a place for people to gather, somewhere that stayed familiar, where family and friends could come back year after year.
More than seventy-five years later, it’s still that kind of place. And for a little while, it’s yours. A place for Pinochle, Yahtzee, and Uno when the rain keeps you inside. For potlucks and barbecues down by the water. For long afternoons on the lake, fires after dark, and maybe a little skinny dipping for the daring.
If you look around, you’ll find pieces of the people who loved this place before us. Laurel planted the lily pads that still bloom pink along the waterfront. Her picture rests in the living room with Harold’s beside it, and she turns up in a few of the others too, if you go looking.
A lot has changed since that little fishing shack in 1950. But the reason for this place hasn’t.
